Checking Clutch Disc Wear
Inspection procedure for measuring clutch disc wear without removing the transaxle, using the clutch housing inspection port and a simple ruler.
Introduction
Clutch disc wear can be assessed without removing the transaxle by measuring through the inspection port on the clutch housing. This is a quick check that can prevent unexpected clutch failure by identifying wear before the disc reaches a critical threshold.
Inspection interval:
- Every 15,000 miles under normal street driving conditions
- Every 7,500 miles — or at the end of each race season, whichever comes first — for cars used on track (driver education events, autocross, time trials, or full circuit racing)
Tools
- Metric socket set
- Jack stands
- Floor jack
- Ruler or measuring device
Inspection Procedure
-
Raise the rear of the car and support it on jack stands.
-
Locate the inspection port on the left side of the clutch housing. The port is approximately 25mm (1 inch) in diameter and is covered by a rubber dust cap. The rubber dust cover is frequently missing on used cars; if present, remove it.
-
Look through the inspection port to locate the edge of the clutch slave cylinder piston.
Note: On 944 Turbo models, the heat shield may partially obstruct the view through the port depending on viewing angle. Adjust your position accordingly to get a clear line of sight to the slave cylinder piston edge.
-
Using a ruler or measuring device, measure the distance from the front edge of the inspection port to the edge of the slave cylinder piston.
-
Interpret the measurement:
- ~18 mm — approximately new clutch
- 34 mm or greater — clutch disc is worn to the replacement threshold; schedule clutch replacement
Note: As the clutch disc wears thinner, the pressure plate pushes the release bearing closer to the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder piston therefore extends further out of the housing as the disc wears, increasing the measured distance.
-
If the measurement is at or beyond 34 mm, refer to clutch-01 for the full clutch replacement procedure.
-
Replace the dust cover on the inspection port if present. Lower the vehicle.
