General

When following the torque sequences below, wait approximately 15 minutes between torque steps to allow the studs to stretch and fully settle before the next torque application.

Tighten the head studs in a crosswise pattern, working from the centre of the head outward, so the gasket is clamped evenly. (Removal is the reverse: loosen crosswise from the outside inward.)

Head-stud tightening sequence — ten studs numbered in the factory order over the four cylinder bores. Head-stud tightening sequence, 8-valve engines (factory fig. 15-10): begin at the two centre studs (1, 2) and work outward in a crosswise pattern. The car symbol marks the front of the engine.

Note: The 16V tightening sequence differs slightly from the 8V sequence. Refer to the 16V Cylinder Head and Head Gasket Removal and Installation procedure for the correct 16V sequence.
