Tools

  • Stubby Phillips head screwdriver
  • Standard Phillips head screwdriver (optional — the stubby can be used throughout)
  • Small flat tip screwdriver
  • Small needle-nose pliers

Temperature Controls Removal

  1. Remove the four control knobs from the temperature control unit.

Caution: Use extra care when removing the fan speed control knob. A light bulb is located behind it and the retaining tabs on the knob stem break easily. If the knob resists, slide a small flat tip screwdriver behind it and apply gentle outward pressure while pulling.

  2. Slide a small flat tip screwdriver carefully under each outside edge of the temperature controls cover to release the retaining clips and remove the cover.

  3. Remove the four Phillips head screws behind the cover that hold the temperature control unit in place.

  4. Slide the control unit out far enough to access the electrical connector on the back. Disconnect the plug. The unit will now slide completely out of the dash.

Clock and Cigarette Lighter Removal

To remove the clock, cigarette lighter, or their light bulbs, the temperature control unit must first be partially removed (through step 3 above, leaving the unit loosened but not fully removed from the dash).

  1. Complete steps 1–3 of the Temperature Controls Removal procedure above to loosen the control unit.

  2. Open the passenger's door (left-hand drive cars). Locate the side trim panel and remove the single Phillips head screw using a stubby screwdriver. Slide the panel slightly toward the front of the car to disengage its tabs from the vent.

  3. Behind the side trim panel, locate three Phillips head screws. Remove the bottom screw that secures the trim panel.

  4. Using a small flat tip screwdriver, carefully remove the rectangular trim cover next to the passenger side vent control lever.

  5. Remove the two Phillips head screws behind the rectangular trim cover.

  6. Remove the temperature sensor intake cover by rotating it 90° counter-clockwise. Needle-nose pliers work well here, but exercise care — the vents on the cover are fragile.

  7. Remove the single Phillips head screw behind the temperature sensor vent cover.

Note: The trim piece may be stuck and will require determining why before pulling. A putty knife slid gently around the edges can help release adhesion to the upholstery beneath.

  8. Pull out on the right side of the trim piece. The left edge of the clock trim panel should now slide out from behind the temperature control unit. When releasing the right side, the trim piece may be held on the vent slider — carefully push the slider head through the slots to avoid breaking them.

Installation

  1. Position the clock trim panel (if removed) so its left edge sits behind the temperature control unit.
  2. Install the four Phillips head screws that secure the temperature control unit.
  3. Install the temperature control unit cover — press gently on the outer edges to engage the retaining clips.
  4. Install all four control knobs. Take care with the fan speed control knob to avoid breaking the retaining tabs on its stem (which also holds the light bulb).
  5. Install the single Phillips head screw in the temperature sensor intake opening, then insert the round vent cover and rotate 90° clockwise.
  6. Install the two Phillips head screws beside the passenger's vent control lever and press the rectangular trim cover back into place.
  7. Install the Phillips head screw in the outside edge of the front trim piece.
  8. Install the side trim panel using its single Phillips head screw.
