Mirror Removal and Installation — Exterior
Procedures for removing and installing the exterior mirrors on early 944s (pre-1985.5) and late-model 944s, covering glass removal, motor and housing removal, and wiring connector details.
Tools
- Small flat tip screwdriver
- Electrical connector pin removal tool
- Metric socket set and ratchet
Note: If both mirrors are being removed simultaneously, or if new mirrors are being installed, confirm that the magnifying (passenger-side) glass is installed in the correct housing before final assembly. The passenger-side mirror uses glass that makes objects appear closer.
Procedure — Early 944 (Pre-1985.5)
-
Carefully pry the mirror glass away from the mirror drive mechanism using a flat tip screwdriver. Three push-pin connectors hold the glass in place. The glass breaks easily — do not apply excessive force.
-
Once the glass is separated from the drive mechanism, disconnect the heater wires from the back of the mirror and set the glass aside safely.
-
Using the appropriate socket and ratchet, remove the three bolts holding the drive mechanism to the mirror housing.
-
Separate the drive mechanism from the housing and disconnect the electrical connector for the drive mechanism.
-
To remove the mirror housing from the car, the electrical connector plug must be removed from the wires so the housing can slide over the wiring harness. Use an electrical connector pin removal tool to push the pins out of the plug one at a time.
-
Rotate the mirror housing toward the front of the car. An Allen head bolt will be visible underneath. Remove the Allen head bolt and the mirror housing will slide off the wiring harness.
Procedure — Late Model 944s (1985.5 and Newer)
The mirror glass is held to the housing by a bayonet-style locking ring with several teeth, one of which has a tab that locks into the bayonet mount. Disengage the locking ring by inserting a flat tip screwdriver into the teeth and pushing the screwdriver handle to the left (as seen facing the mirror), rotating the locking ring counter-clockwise.
-
On the underside of the mirror near the center, find the small hole. Insert the flat tip screwdriver into the hole and rotate the sliding locking ring counter-clockwise.
-
Remove the mirror glass from the housing. Disconnect the mirror heating wire from the back of the glass and set the glass aside.
-
Remove the three bolts holding the motor assembly in place and remove the motor.
-
Before removing the wires from the motor electrical connector, mark the wire orientations relative to the indent on the motor plug. This simplifies reinstallation.
-
Using a pin removal tool, press the female pins out of the motor electrical connector.
-
Turn the mirror housing on the base enough to expose the mounting screws. Remove the mounting screws and lift the mirror off the door.
-
Feed the motor wires down through the base of the mirror as it is lifted off the door.
Installation is the reverse of removal. If the wire orientations were not marked before removal, the diagram below shows the correct wire positions looking at the back side of the plug.
