Hood Strut Replacement
Procedure for replacing hood struts on the 944, 944S, 944S2, 944 Turbo, and 968, with part number and tips for safe installation of compressed struts.
Introduction
Hood strut replacement on a 944 is straightforward. An assistant is helpful during installation.
Tools
- Needle nose pliers
- Flat tip screwdriver
- Hood prop (or broom stick cut to appropriate length)

Procedure

Raise and prop open the hood. A broom stick cut to appropriate length works well.

Install one side at a time.

Using needle nose pliers, remove the spring clips for the hood strut retaining pins. A flat tip screwdriver may also be needed to disengage the clip from the pin.

While supporting the hood, remove the strut retaining pins and remove the old strut from the car.

Install the new strut and attach using the retaining pins.
Caution: If the new strut arrives compressed and held in place with a strap, do not cut the strap until ready to install. New struts will be difficult to compress for installation. Installing the new strut may require raising the hood slightly higher than its normal raised position. Do not allow the rear edges of the hood to contact the windshield — this can crack the windshield.

Install the spring clips onto the strut retaining pins.

Repeat for the other side.
