Information

Early 944s produced from 1983 to 1986 used a three-piece piston-and-spring oil pressure relief valve. Early 1987 924S engines also used this arrangement.

Early 1987 engines (production beginning July 1986) received a new one-piece pressure relief valve. A one-piece retrofit valve was also produced for the earlier three-piece style: part number 944 107 035 11.

The early 1987 one-piece relief valve (944 107 035 01) was not corrosion-treated and was subject to failure. All 1987 engines produced from October 1986 onward received a corrosion-treated version that addressed most failure problems. The table below lists 1987 engines by number and the valve they received.

Caution: Early 1987 relief valves should be replaced during oil cooler seal repairs or at the first sign of oil pressure problems.

Early 1987 Relief Valve Applications (944 107 035 01)

Engine Number (up to)Vehicle

43 H 60385924S / 944 Automatic Transmission
42 H 00140944S
45 H 00086944 Turbo

All vehicles with engine numbers between the above early and late numbers should have their oil pressure relief valve replaced during oil cooler seal repairs or on any oil pressure problem.

Later 1987 Relief Valve (944 107 035 01 — with Corrosion Treatment)

Engine Number (from)Vehicle

45 H 01256944 Turbo

The early 1987 valve was later replaced by a newer style (944 107 035 02).

Relief Valve Applications by Year and Model

The two one-piece relief valves are different lengths and are not interchangeable. Use the table below to select the correct valve.

Each relief valve requires an O-ring (944 107 935 11) and an aluminium seal ring (N 043 815 3) that should be replaced each time the relief valve is removed.

Alignment Tool Requirement

Oil cooler housing alignment is critical with the new-style one-piece relief valves to prevent binding. Use the appropriate alignment tool during oil cooler housing installation:

Service Recommendation

For cars still fitted with the original three-piece relief valve, replacement is not recommended unless the valve fails. The old-style valve is reliable; the new-style is expensive. When replacement is necessary, ensure you obtain the correct part for your specific vehicle.
