Oil Flow Path
The 944 uses a pressurised, wet-sump lubrication system. Oil flows along the following path:
- Oil pan — oil collects in the pan at the bottom of the engine.
- Pickup tube and screen — the oil pump draws oil up through a pickup tube whose screen keeps debris out of the system.
- Oil pump — mounted at the front of the engine and driven from the crankshaft, the pump pressurises the oil. See LUBE-07.
- Pressure relief valve — regulates maximum system pressure by bleeding excess oil back toward the sump. See LUBE-02 and LUBE-03.
- Oil cooler — pressurised oil passes through the oil cooler, where engine coolant carries away heat. See LUBE-01.
- Oil filter — oil is filtered before entering the main gallery. The oil pressure sender taps in near the filter. See LUBE-05.
- Main oil gallery — filtered, cooled oil is distributed to the engine's lubrication points: the crankshaft main and connecting-rod bearings, the cylinder head (camshaft and valvetrain), and the balance shafts.
- Return to the pan — oil drains back down through the engine to the pan, and the cycle repeats.
