Maintenance Intervals
Timing belts have long been a critical maintenance item for 944 owners. The recommendations below are based on the most recent factory recommendations, supplemented with additional guidance from practical experience.
944 Maintenance Schedule
| Mileage | Maintenance |
|---|---|
| 2,000 | Inspect and re-tension timing and balance shaft belts. |
| 15,000* | Inspect and re-tension timing and balance shaft belts. |
| 30,000 | Inspect and re-tension timing and balance shaft belts. |
| 45,000 | Replace timing and balance shaft belts. Inspect rollers and replace if necessary. |
* For vehicles which see limited service, inspect the belts after two years if 15,000 miles has not been reached, and annually thereafter.
968 Maintenance Schedule

Parts
For highlighted items, choose one part based on specific model.
Note: Based on reported tensioner stud failures, it is recommended to replace the cam belt tensioner mounting stud at each timing belt replacement on pre-1987 model year cars (which are not equipped with spring tensioners).

Footnotes
Footnote 1: Also fits 1987 MY 924S up to engine #43 H 01919 (MT) & #43 H 60384 (AT).
Footnote 2: Also fits 1987 MY 924S from engine #43 H 01920 (MT) & #43 H 60385 (AT).
Footnote 3: All 944s through the 1986 model year used the eccentric roller tensioner and tensioner stud. The Porsche part number is for a stud that is 101 mm long. The earliest 944s used a tensioner stud that is 106 mm long. This longer stud may not be available from Porsche. It is also unclear as to the exact cutoff date when use of the shorter 101 mm stud began; it may coincide with when Porsche changed to a different style oil pump in the middle of the 1984 model year.
