944 Doors, Hood & Rear Hatch — Adjustment & Torques

Factory service data for the 944's opening panels — how to align the front hood, doors and electric rear hatch by gap and flush, how the gas-strut supports mount, and how to set the electric hatch-release cable. The workshop manual treats these as body panels: alignment is set visually to even gaps, so this page captures the adjustment logic and the few fastening notes rather than a torque table the manual does not print.

Service data for the 944's opening panels — the front hood, the doors and the electric rear hatch — from Groups 53, 55 and 57 of the factory workshop manual. These are body panels, and the manual sets them by eye to an even gap, not to a fixed dimension: the alignment target is a uniform, flush shut-line all round, achieved by shifting the panel on its mounting bolts before those bolts are finally tightened. The manual therefore prints no numeric hinge, lock or striker torques for this group and no gap figure in millimetres — the values below are the ones it does give, plus the alignment method it relies on. How body panels are aligned

Every bolted panel on the car — hood, doors, hatch — is adjusted the same way. The mounting bolts pass through oversized or slotted holes that let the panel slide before it is clamped. The sequence is always:

  1. Fit the panel and run its mounting bolts up finger-tight only.
  2. Close the panel and move it within the slots until the gap to the surrounding bodywork is equal all round and the outer skin sits flush with the neighbouring panels.
  3. Hold that position and tighten the mounting bolts.

Because the target is a matched, even shut-line rather than a set measurement, there is no gap dimension to quote — you align to the panels the car already has.

Front hood

The front hood is bolted to its hinges and carried open by two gas-pressure struts that clip onto ball studs at each side.

Alignment. With the hinge mounting bolts finger-tight, lower the hood and shift it until the clearance between the hood and the fenders and front panel is equal on both sides, then raise the hood and tighten the mounting bolts. This is the only alignment the hood needs — set the side gaps even, then clamp.

Gas struts. The struts unclip from their ball heads once the hood is raised and supported. On removal, tilt each strut to one side and unclip it at the ball head; on the retaining-pin end, press the strut down slightly and draw out the pin with pliers, having first freed its retaining clip.

Caution: When refitting the struts, compress them slightly to reach the take-up bores — do not lever the hood upward to gain travel, or you risk the hood contacting and damaging the windshield. Support the front of the hood by hand while the struts are disconnected.

The struts unclip from their ball studs for removal; a strut that no longer holds the hood up is renewed as a unit.

Doors

The doors follow the same alignment principle: the hinge fasteners are slackened, the door is set to an even gap against the front fender, sill and rear quarter with the skin flush, and the fasteners are retightened. Inside the door, the handle, lock, outer handle, window guide rail and central-locking actuator are all clip- and screw-mounted and refit in reverse of removal; none carries a printed torque. When refitting the central-locking actuating element, note its rest setting before removal and restore it on installation, and clip the lock microswitch on securely so it seats fully — a partly-seated microswitch is a common cause of a door that will not report locked/unlocked to the central-locking control.

Rear hatch

The electric rear hatch mounts on hinges at the roof line, is held open by a pair of gas-pressure struts like the hood, and is released by an electric motor that pulls a cable to open both latches at once.

Alignment is again by even gap and flush skin at the hinges, set with the hinge bolts finger-tight and then clamped.

Setting the electric release cable

The release cable must be adjusted with the motor crank at top dead centre, so that in the rest position the latches sit fully open and do not drag:

  1. Disconnect the release-motor plug. With one made-up lead, bridge the two brown wires of the separated plug halves.
  2. Connect a second lead to the blue wire of the motor plug section, then briefly touch its other end to the positive (red) supply pin to run the motor crank to top dead centre, then stop.
  3. With the crank at top dead centre, turn the cable's adjusting threads until the locking bars of both latches are fully open.
  4. Remove the leads and reconnect the plug.

Tip: With the motor in its neutral (rest) position the latches must not be under load — if a latch is still being pulled, the cable is over-adjusted and the hatch will drag or fail to close cleanly. Back the adjusting thread off until the bars sit free.

If the hatch will not release electrically, the latch mechanism can be freed by hand by pulling the Bowden cable until the hatch pops, which lets you reach the motor and lock to service them.

Striker and rear side-panel note

On the rear side panel that carries the hatch striker, the striker stamping area was enlarged from the 1991 model year. When an outer rear side panel is replaced on an earlier car, the inner rear side panel must be reworked in the striker area to accept the later outer panel. Porsche also recommends fitting a new striker and a new striker pin whenever the outer rear side panel is renewed, so the latch beds into fresh, correctly-positioned hardware rather than a worn strike.

What this page does not carry

The doors/hood/hatch group of the workshop manual is a body-repair section: it specifies alignment by even gap and flush skin, and it lists the hinge, lock, handle and actuator parts and their fit order, but it prints no fastener tightening torques and no gap dimension in millimetres for these panels. Where you need a torqued value nearby — for example a seat-belt anchor bolt reached while trimming a rear side panel — that figure lives with its own component group, not here.
