944 Air Conditioning — Technical Data, Refrigerant & Service

Factory data for the 944's R12 air-conditioning system — the refrigerant charge, the compressor oil fill, the rupture-seal and coupling-power figures, and the compressor/condenser/line tightening torques — followed by a concise evacuate → flush → charge service overview with its vacuum and pressure targets. This is an R12 system, so handle the refrigerant only with proper recovery equipment. Pressures switch between bar and psi and torques between N·m and ft·lb.

944 only

944 Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) — Service, Sensors & Torques

Service data for the optional Bosch three-channel ABS (M593) fitted to the 944, 944 S and 944 Turbo — the system layout, the wheel-speed sensors and their fixed (non-adjustable) air gap, hydraulic-unit and relay service notes, the bleeding rule, and every ABS-specific tightening torque the factory states. The sensor air gap is a design feature and is not set on the car; bleeding follows the same procedure as a car without ABS.

944 only

944 Automatic Transmission (Type 087) — Data, ATF & Torques

Factory data for the 944's three-speed automatic transaxle — the Type 087 M / 087 N unit, its converter and final-drive ratios, the torque-converter and stall-speed figures, the ATF and final-drive fluid specifications and capacities (total fill versus the drain-and-refill change quantity), the tightening torques, and the ATF-and-filter service. Match the ratios to the code letter stamped on your transmission; USA/Japan figures are given in brackets.

944 only

Service and overhaul reference for the 944's three-speed automatic transaxle (Type 087 M / 087 N) — the torque-converter oil-seal renewal, the axial-play (end-float) adjustment between transmission and final drive with its measured shim table, removing and disassembling the valve body with its bolt torques and valve identification, the 2nd-gear-brake piston-rod distances, and governor service. A companion to the automatic-transmission data page; capture the measured clearances and torques here before you open the unit.

944 only

944 Body — Checking & Alignment Dimensions

Factory body checking and alignment reference data for the 944 — the Celette straightening-bench attachment sets and take-up tolerances, the floor-plate/front-end control dimensions, and the extra checking dimensions that distinguish the Cabriolet from the coupe. All figures are in millimetres. This is a reference page; the full straightening procedure is out of scope.

944 only

944 Brakes — Disc, Pad & Caliper Figures and Torques

Factory brake figures for the 944 — new and wear-limit thicknesses for the discs, pad thickness and wear limit, caliper piston sizes, the disc runout and thickness checks, and the hydraulic-system tightening torques. Torques switch between N·m and ft·lb; thicknesses are fixed dimensions in millimetres.

944 only

944 Bumpers & Spoiler — R&I and Impact-Absorber Data

Factory removal-and-installation reference for the 944 front spoiler, front bumper and rear bumper — the fastener sizes, the impact-absorber layout and the alignment notes that matter when you refit them. The energy-absorbing (impact) bumpers fitted to USA and Canada cars are called out where they differ. 944 Doors, Hood & Rear Hatch — Adjustment & Torques

Factory service data for the 944's opening panels — how to align the front hood, doors and electric rear hatch by gap and flush, how the gas-strut supports mount, and how to set the electric hatch-release cable. The workshop manual treats these as body panels: alignment is set visually to even gaps, so this page captures the adjustment logic and the few fastening notes rather than a torque table the manual does not print.

944 only

944 Drive-Belt & Balance-Shaft Belt Tension (Special Tool 9201)

Factory belt-tension gauge readings for the 8-valve 944 measured with the Porsche belt-tension tester (Special Tool 9201/9202): the poly-rib accessory drive belt, the toothed camshaft (timing) belt, and the toothed balance-shaft belt, plus how to calibrate the 9201. Every figure is a dimensionless scale reading — check tension only on a cold engine.

944 only

944 Exhaust System — Layout, Flanges & Torques

Factory data for the 944 exhaust system — the three flanged joints from the manifold back to the final muffler, the single M8 tightening torque that applies to every flange, and the factory method for replacing the exhaust pipe, primary muffler or catalytic converter by welding a sleeve into the pipe.

944 only

944 Exterior Lights & Headlights — Bulbs, Aim & Concealed-Headlight Service

Factory service data for the 944's exterior lighting — greasing the concealed (pop-up) headlight linkage, removing and refitting the headlight beam-control actuators, checking the electric beam-control voltages, and aiming the main headlights to the factory beam-drop figures. The '88-on cars carry an in-cabin load-compensation switch; the aiming targets change with its position.

944 only

944 Final Drive — Ring & Pinion, Backlash, Oil & Torques

Factory setup data for the 944's rear-mounted final drive — the hypoid ring-and-pinion, its backlash and tapered-roller-bearing preload figures, the pinion setting (deviation 'r') that governs shim selection, the final-drive oil grade and level check, and the tightening torques. The manual Type 016 J/K unit and the automatic Type 087 N unit use different backlash and preload values, so read the column for the transaxle you have.

944 only

944 Front Suspension — Tightening Torques

Factory tightening torques for the 944 front axle — control arm, cross member, steering knuckle, spring strut, stabiliser and wheel fasteners — plus the notes on the light-alloy control arms introduced for 1985/2. Torques switch between N·m and ft·lb.

924S944944S

944 Glass & Sunroof — Windshield Bonding & Sunroof Adjustment

Factory service data for the 944's bonded windshield and lifting sunroof — the three windshield-bonding systems (heated single-cartridge cement, Sekuriflex, and the two-pack adhesive), their bead sizes, primer and flash-off steps, curing conditions and installed glass gap, plus the interior-mirror bonding and the sunroof same-plane adjustment. Every dimension in millimetres is fixed as printed.
