Oil-pressure figures

All figures are taken at operating temperature — 80 °C176 °F oil temperature. A cold engine reads higher and falls as the oil warms; see the troubleshooting page for the cold-versus-warm behaviour.

A warm idle below 2.5 bar36 psi, or a reading that does not climb past 4.5 bar65 psi off idle, points to a worn pump, a stuck relief valve, or bearing wear — confirm with the gauge before condemning anything, because a faulty sender or gauge fakes the same picture.

Measuring oil pressure

Read the pressure with a mechanical gauge, not the dashboard lamp or gauge:

  1. Remove the oil-pressure transmitter from the oil/water cooler housing and screw the oil-pressure tester (VW 1342, with the M 10 × 1 adapter) into its place.
  2. Run the engine to operating temperature — 80 °C176 °F oil temperature — checking it with an oil-temperature tester rather than the dashboard gauge.
  3. At idle the pressure should read 2.5 bar36 psi or more. Have a second person raise the engine speed to 4000 rpm; the reading should be greater than 4.5 bar65 psi.
  4. Refit the transmitter with a new seal and tighten it to 35 N·m26 ft·lb.

The span between the dipstick marks is roughly 1.3 L1.4 qt, so do not top up for a reading that has only just left the upper mark. High oil consumption with clean exhaust usually means leaks or the breather; with blue smoke it points to valve-stem seals or bores.
