944 Glass & Sunroof — Windshield Bonding & Sunroof Adjustment
Factory service data for the 944's bonded windshield and lifting sunroof — the three windshield-bonding systems (heated single-cartridge cement, Sekuriflex, and the two-pack adhesive), their bead sizes, primer and flash-off steps, curing conditions and installed glass gap, plus the interior-mirror bonding and the sunroof same-plane adjustment. Every dimension in millimetres is fixed as printed.
Factory service data for the 944's fixed glass and lifting sunroof. The windshield is a bonded (glued-in) screen, not a rubber-gasket unit — over the model run Porsche used three different bonding systems, and the correct primer, bead and curing routine depends on which system your car and replacement glass call for. Bead sizes and glass gaps are given in millimetres and are fixed (they are not unit-toggled), the same posture as any tool/bore dimension on this archive. Curing conditions that are quoted as a temperature do switch between °C and °F.
Caution: A bonded windshield is a structural, safety-relevant joint — on airbag cars it also backs up the passenger airbag. Do not move or operate the car until the specified curing time has fully elapsed, and never prime-coat a Sekuriflex screen.
Which bonding system
Three systems appear across the 944 production run. Identify yours before ordering an adhesive set, because the primer, activator and curing rules differ.
| System | Introduced | Glass | Adhesive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heated single-cartridge cement | early cars | conventional bonded screen | one cartridge, warmed before use |
| Sekuriflex | from the 1986 model year, and all airbag cars | Sekuriflex screen with a pre-applied Betaseal strip | single-cartridge adhesive set with activator + body primer |
| Two-pack adhesive | later cars | conventional bonded screen | mixed component A + B cartridge |
Heated single-cartridge cement
The earliest bonded system. The screen sits on adjustable spacers and eccentrics in the body aperture, on a bead of warmed cement.
- Warm the cartridge in a water bath at 40 °C104 °F to 60 °C140 °F for about 30 minutes before applying the cement.
- Bead: lay a tapered (triangular) bead of cement around the entire body opening edge — cross-section about 9 mm high by 5 mm wide at the base.
- Set the glass: mount the spacers and eccentric, tilt the screen in on the double-suction cups, then adjust the eccentrics so a 2 + 1 mm gap remains between the glass and the body.
- New glass only: clean with cleaning solution and coat the filter-print (frit) area with glass primer — the primer must not extend beyond the filter print.
Caution: The cement needs a drying temperature of at least +15 °C59 °F; lower temperatures impair the bond considerably. High humidity or lightly sprinkling water on the cement speeds drying, but even so do not move or operate the car for 3 hours.
Sekuriflex windshield (and airbag cars)
Used from the 1986 model year and on all airbag-equipped cars. The Sekuriflex screen carries a factory-applied Betaseal sealing strip, so the glass itself is not prime-coated — priming is applied to the body seam only.
- Removal uses the vibrating cutter with a cranked blade at vibration stage 3 (inside, along the A-pillars and front roof rail) and a U-shaped blade at stage 6 (outside, along the scuttle). Open the side windows first and leave them open until the new bond has cured.
- Body seam: clean with cleaning solution and wipe off — leave no residue — then apply body primer to the seam only (not to painted areas that stay visible).
- Glass side: apply activator to the contact face of the Betaseal strip and wait at least 10 minutes for the air to escape. Do not prime the Sekuriflex screen.
- Set the glass: with spacers and eccentrics fitted, adjust so a gap of approx. 2 mm remains between glass and body at the top.
Caution — curing conditions. For adequate bond strength before the car leaves the workshop: curing time min. 10 hours, temperature min. 15 °C59 °F, relative humidity min. 40 %. If it is colder or drier, allow more time. Do not move the car or start the engine until curing is complete.
Two-pack adhesive windshield
The later system uses a two-component adhesive set (part no. 000.043.038.01): a cartridge of component A decanted into a mixing cartridge of component B, with primer, activator, cleaning solution and nozzles supplied. Removal is identical to the Sekuriflex screen above.
Mixing:
- Pierce and open the component-A cartridge, fit the injector nozzle, and press component A into the component-B mixing cartridge.
- Screw the mixing rod into the mixing cartridge, clamp it in a drill, then mix at 700 to 900 rpm, rotating the cartridge about 25 double strokes stop-to-stop — perform all 25 fairly rapidly.
- Pull the mixing rod back until it rattles to engage the mixing disc, remove the rod, fit the application nozzle.
Caution — open time is 15 minutes. That is the total time available to apply the adhesive and set the windshield into the aperture; work without pause once mixed.
Setting the glass:
- Apply a trapezoidal continuous bead of the mixed adhesive to the body flange — the factory bead profile is about 8 mm at the base, 5 mm at the top and 7 mm high.
- Fit spacers and eccentric adjusters, tilt the screen into the aperture, and adjust so a 2 mm gap remains in the roof area between glass and body.
- Remove any squeezed-out adhesive immediately and clean visible areas with cleaning solution.
Caution — curing. The bond does not reach full strength immediately: curing time 3 hours at a temperature of min. 5 °C41 °F. Do not operate the vehicle until curing is complete.
Interior mirror bonding
The interior rearview mirror is bonded to the inside of the windshield with its own Porsche adhesive set: cleaning solution 000.043.157.00, primer 000.043.158.00, cover-sheet template 000.043.177.00, activator 000.043.052.00, adhesive 000.043.051.00.
- Position (mark the adhesive plate on the outside of the glass): dimension A = 623 mm for both body styles; dimension B = 142 mm on the Coupe, 84 mm on the Cabriolet.
- Scrape off old adhesive, roughen and clean the mirror's bonding plate, then mask the glass with the cover-sheet template so the position mark sits centred in the window.
- Prime the masked area with a thin coat and allow a flash-off time of 15 to 20 minutes; activate and allow a further flash-off of 2 minutes.
- Apply a drop of adhesive to the mirror plate and press it in place for about 40 to 50 seconds.
- Bond strength reaches 60 % after 1 hour and 100 % after 24 hours.
Sunroof adjustment
The lifting sunroof is adjusted so the roof lid and the car-roof panel sit in the same plane (flush) all round. Adjustment is by the element guides and the gates bolted to the lid, not by a quoted height figure.
- Element guides: with the roof installed, set the element guides in their slots so the lid and roof panel are flush, then tighten the mounting screws. The staybolts of the element guides must sit at their neutral (zero) position, within +3 mm of it (per the factory sketch); if they are outside that band, remove the luggage-compartment trim panel and correct the excess by adjusting the switch lever on the rail (electric drive: correct instead at the microswitches on the drive).
- Gates: the gates bolted to the roof lid have slots that let the lid and roof panel be brought into plane — check the gate guides and replace any that are worn or damaged.
- Cable anchors: adjust the anchors in the roof lid so the lid cable runs parallel to the car-roof cable.
- If the lid protrudes at the front: unscrew the centering wedges on the roof beam and refit them with washers underneath.
