Parts Information
There are two different styles of water pump used on the 924S and 944 (including Turbos). The new-style pump has a guard rail for the timing belt and a larger idler roller (46.2 mm vs. 32.0 mm). The new-style pump was installed on all cars produced after July 1986. Installing the new-style pump is recommended when replacing the pump on any car.
For cars that previously had the old-style pump, fitting the new-style requires modifying the rear timing cover and purchasing the belt guard and larger idler roller. Some new-style pumps come with the belt guard pre-installed — confirm with your parts supplier when ordering.
The snap ring groove for the thermostat has also been moved: previously 4.5 mm from the sealing surface, now at 7 mm. This requires the new-style thermostat and spacer.
On turbocharged cars, there is a nozzle on the water pump supplying cooling water to the turbocharger bearing housing. On normally-aspirated cars this nozzle position is sealed with a block-off plate. The block-off plate/nozzle is sealed to the pump by an o-ring that should be replaced when the new pump is installed. On some pumps the block-off plate/nozzle is mounted with a 6 mm stud-and-nut and a 6 mm × 20 mm bolt; most new pumps have two bolt holes, requiring transfer of the 6 mm stud from the old pump or purchase of an additional bolt.

Procedure
- Place car on jack stands or ramps.
- Disconnect the battery positive lead.
- Using ENG-13, set the engine at TDC on cylinder number 1.
- Using ENG-03, remove the starter and install the flywheel lock (P9206).
- Using ENG-05, remove the balance shaft belt, timing belt, rollers, balance shaft sprockets, crankshaft gear, and rear timing cover.
- Using COOL-02, drain the cooling system.
- Disconnect the coolant hoses from the water pump.
- Loosen the water pump retaining bolts and nuts (10 mm socket) and remove the water pump.
Tip: This is a good time to inspect and replace the crankshaft and balance shaft oil seals.
- Install the thermostat on the new water pump using the snap ring from the old pump.
Note — Thermostat Fitment: On the new-style water pump, the gap between the thermostat sealing surface and the snap ring groove is 7 mm. This requires the new-style thermostat and sealing ring, plus the 2.5 mm support washer between the snap ring and the thermostat. The old-style water pump has a 4.5 mm gap and requires the old-style thermostat and sealing ring without the support washer.
- On turbocharged cars: install the turbocharger thermostat and thermostat nozzle with o-ring on the new water pump.
- On normally-aspirated cars: install the block-off nozzle with o-ring on the new water pump.
- Install the new water pump using a new gasket (normally supplied with the pump).
Note: The factory manual specifies Loctite 270 on the water pump fasteners. This is acceptable for the nuts. Using Loctite 270 on the bolts increases the risk of stripping the bolt holes during future removal.
- Tighten the water pump nuts and bolts to 8 Nm (6 ft-lbs).
- Using ENG-06, install the timing belt, balance shaft belt, and all rollers. The belts are tensioned during ENG-06 using ENG-10.
- Install the air filter assembly (AF-01).
- Reconnect the battery.
- Using COOL-02, fill and vent the cooling system.
- Install the skid pan.
- Remove the car from jack stands/ramps.
